Curiosity Kills

Curiosity is my ever-present love
The only thing keeping me hooked to life
And what a precarious life it is!
When curiosity itself steals lives
Luring me into death’s clever traps

So I fence in my soft heart and smile
Open up without ever fully trusting
Braced for eventual betrayal
I expect inevitable hurt

I shy not from battle
But come well-prepared
For the very worst scenarios
The world is cold, I realize
I must be ready to discover horror
Without giving in to apathy’s safety

Not the case for you, you
Who couldn’t handle the truth

But you just had to go ask anyway
Why your neighbour disappeared
Without warning that one night
And what really happened to
The money taken from our pockets?

Then you came back and
Drilled a bullet straight
Thorough your skull
(already softened by fear
and harmful knowledge)

And you know,

I’m still wondering why.
