a diction

Refuge from chaos

Inescapable longing

entering my veins

Embracing tranquility

Drowning into the deluge

The author's comments:

This poem was originally intended to capture the teenage mind against the unremitting war on illegal drugs. However, after writing the first draft, I thought that the work's juxtaposition was both spurious and unjust in today's ever-changing landscape. Thus, my Tanka poem "diction" was born. It seeks to encapsulate the personal experience of addiction—and the smokescreen of stability associated with it. Furthermore, this poem explores the periphery of the word 'addiction' as a whole (not just illegal substances). And while this divulging term may conjure different experiences for each and every reader, this poem takes the individual through the intimate thoughts of the protagonist.
