I pull my head into my shell
whenever someone comes knocking.
I retreat into the deep dark corner,
where the only noise to be heard
is the frantic thumping of my heart.
Questions scrape my hard shell,
extending like fingers through the cracks.
Why doesn’t she answer?
Is she rude?
Is she shy?
Why so serious?
Inside this enclosure,
I am protected.
I am cocooned and secure;
Fetus.
Nobody reaches me,
I need no one.
If a particularly adventurous spirit
aims to destroy my peace,
my head comes out,
my mouth opens,
and snaps.
But that happens rarely.
Never.
