Where I'm From
I’m from white hallways and plastic door locks.
I’m from the small red sandbox
I’m from my secret spot behind the garage,
and the bean box in the basement.
I’m from the big green chair
and the blanket with the train tracks on it.
I’m from the Nintendo in my neighbor’s house,
and from the pedal that made the drum go “thump”!
I’m from Sunday school puppet shows
and “are you related to the pastor?”
I’m from the small cups of cranberry juice
and the gymnasium full of church-goers.
I’m from the box of croutons underneath the drawer.
From the exploding pizza bagels
From Sunday night family dinners
and the jar of dill pickles.
I’m from when Uncle Al visits
and when he brought us candy.
From when Uncle Bill made us laugh
And from the yellow clapping hands.
I’m from my stuffed rabbit
From my special white blankets
From the big green Wubbie
And from “is it done washing yet?”
My life comes from these moments
Like a potter that shapes his bowl
So is my life shaped by these times.
