Phantom Skin by Finn Knadle
I want to rip out of my skin
like wrapping paper on my 11th birthday.
To unwrap my skin
and see
my core.
I need you to see
who I am
and to see that I am not
your daughter.
And while in your eyes I am may be
a golden example of loss—
A loss of flesh, blood, and mind—
I am still human.
I am not becoming
someone else,
for I am who I am.
I just want my body to reflect it.
And I beg you
to let it.
