Demons
I still remember the twinkling candle
and how it melts and trickles like autumn leaves.
You spark it up with your lighter,
or on some days, with your glittering wink.
You always walk like you had a sparkle in your step,
electrifying the turned faces that stop and stare.
How could a smile so golden
be tainted with shadows from the inside out?
Was I too stupid
to see the spotlighted broken heart on you sleeve?
Or maybe I was blinded by your comforting glow.
You still illuminate rooms with your presence,
even with your shadows flowing out towards me.
I still see the flame in your spirit,
but it flickers on and off
like how your lighter won’t create a spark anymore.
We watch the candle burn out
and melt to a beige puddle,
finally becoming at peace with the darkness.

This piece is about two characters from a story that I'm writing. I like writing poetry that helps develops their relationships and their characters.
