Snow Day
Toothpaste is carefully applied to noses, spoons under pillows, and pyjamas are worn inside out.
Children; believers still in such superstitions.
Teenagers scowling at the childish ways
but little do they know.
The next morning wakes and all discover...
A blanket has been wrapped around our world.
It is crystalline white, light, airy,
and cold.
It stings and shimmers
and illuminates the heavy shadow of night.
It is snow.
Children peer out the window
and shake their families awake.
While mother
stumbles
out of bed
gloves and scarves are cast upon little bodies
already.
The hum of automobiles ceases to exist
and the roads are unblemished by tire marks and gasoline.
Pure white
a blank page waiting for childrens' feet to stamp upon it.
Every telly is tuned
to every child's favorite channel
and all eyes are glued to the scrolling school closings.
Snow day-Huzzah!
