This is a Hawaiian Native Plant that grows down makai (shoreline) and up mauka (mountain). If you notice, this plant blooms only HALF a flower, why? Because it is believed that way back in the old hawaiian days, there were a couple that fell in love but it was forbidden because she was the ali'is' (High Chief) daughter and he was a "commoner". So their relationship was later discovered and they were forced apart. He was sent up mauka and she was left down makai.
