Night Sky
Staring down upon the starved, skeletal prisoners
The barbed, electric fence surrounding the death camps
Seeing the young, the old, the poor, the once wealthy, the Jews working like emaciated animals; harder than animals
Watching the slaving prisoners, the hanged, the still corpses and the evil, inhuman evil
Forever smelling the stench that wafts up into the air
The odor harsh like hair burning; burning constantly for days on end
The flames devouring plumbers, music teachers, dentists, housewives and students
The flames wrapping around corpses in the crematoriums
The ashes fill my nostrils, going down to my lungs
The taste of death chokes my mouth and nose
Day after dreadful day the words, “Where are you God?” are cried by the dying, and echo in my mind
Brushing the tops of trees in winter; half dead but more alive than the hollow-eyed prisoners in the camps.
Night Sky.
