“I’m not going to the dance with Kari. She’s black! And plus she’s really annoying-“ These are the kinds of rude comments that get thrown around casually in the high-school scene. I have heard many more that I do not care to share. And why share? Why should anybody share such demeaning, hateful thoughts with the world? Nobody likes to be in emotional pain, so why inflict such pain upon others? And where did all this pain begin?
The Atlantic slave trade began in the 16th century and continued on for centuries, resulting in the enslavement of around 12 million unfortunate people. These people were treated horribly by their slave masters. They were whipped and beaten, and often killed to be replaced by “fresh labor”. This major event in history created a massive rift between the whites and the blacks which tragically lingers on, diminishing and destroying humanity today.
One place in particular teems with a plethora of racism. This place is school. Today teenagers unconsciously spew forth the “n-word” like nobody’s business. Sometimes the word is even directed at a Negro, the greatest insult that person could receive. What surprises me most is not the ensuing brawl that would be expected to take place, but rather the lack of it. The whole situation seems to be looked over and ignored by both parties. It is almost like the event never happened at all. Have people become so conditioned to the regular disgorgement of verbal abuse that they just brush it off and move on? The thought is a truly chilling one.
I have been lucky and managed to avoid being the subject of racism, but I have indeed been subject to the sharp sting of verbal abuse several times. Whether the blow was direct or implied, the resulting hurt was at the same crushing level. The pain took a staggering amount of time to diminish, and an even longer time to vanish completely. So I can honestly relate to the victims of racism, and whether the racist slur is brushed off or not, I know that a certain amount of damage has been done nonetheless.
Racist discrimination is one of the lowest acts of humanity, spawned from the pretentious greed of our primal nature. In order for our world to bloom and prosper, we all need to shrug off the heavy weight of racism, spread our wings of love, and fly together in blissful union.

Racism needs to end in order for our society to advance in a healthy and productive manner.

Wow, thanks everybody for sharing your stories! That's what this is all about really. If we share the struggles that we all have, we can learn how to overcome them and lead happier lives. The first step towards the elimination of discrimination is understanding. And that's what we're all doing right here!

All I can say is...wow. I can somewhat relate to this. I used to go to a school where there were only four Chinese/Asian people in the whole school. People were nasty to me and treated me differently just because I wasn't white or black.

"Sharp sting of verbal abuse". I was drawn to it. "the resulting hurt was at the same crushing level." The same crushing level. Those words are very powerful. And yet, while this entry was meant to show how horrible racism is, you managed to weave in beautiful, powerful words to put together a mind blowing, crushing entry. I loved it. Very meaningful to me. :)

My heritage is Greek/Italian-Dutch. When my mom was in Europe, she was often called a "bl*#dy Turk". In middle school, there was a girl who was dutch like me, but she had some sort of ... issue. She was violent and no one liked her, and because of her being Dutch, many people assumed that that was just how dutch kids behave, and then started picking on me. It was adressed, but it was still traumatizing.

I really enjoyed this, you wrote compellingly and with honestly. You had some good facts, and it was relatable. I agree the amount of racism in schools now is shocking, as you don't hear much about it and so we assume that we've moved on, but we haven't.

I love this piece of writing.

You take the reader from the beginning into different aspects of racism. To historic events and to highschool. I also love how you used a quote in the first lines very creative and unique. And I know how racism can feel as well, it is horrible. Human instinct is to beat someone else and be on top of the food chain. That is just how it is. And your writing answers the problem of what has this world come to. I think this should be published because then people will see how other teens/adults/ or even anyone is treating others. It is horrible and sad. It needs to stop.

Your theme of the writing is great (love the detail too) And I love the ending. good word choices and nice essay. Good luck in the contest :D

Good work again. Ideas great. Only area to improve is the diction wasn't as consistent as your others. Great piece thought. I submitted another one. Hope you read and rate.

I really think you made this piece relatable. It's very true that teens are like that today. I liked how you put in good facts as wel as strong opinions. Good job!
