Darkness In Me
The dog came at me, snarling, snapping and spitting. I fell back and scrambled to escape those, giant, deadly teeth. With a yelp, the dog was yanked back by the man holding the leash. I looked up and around me; men in shadowy black cloaks surrounded me, cloaking me in a blanket of darkness. In desperation, I lunged at a pair of knees close to me. I was easily kicked back into the middle of the circle. I hissed in pain as I felt the sharp stab of a needle in my arm and felt my eyes going fuzzy. Struggling to stand I felt myself being lifted. I kicked out one last time before finally fading into quiet black, the screams of the towns’ people fading. I no longer heard the crackling of fire burning wood, or the crashing of buildings falling, as fire wound through my veins, numbing my body, then my brain.
I woke, tangled in a blanket with a small silver chain snaking around my ankle. I shrieked and tore at it with desperate hands. But the chain was tough as steel, and wouldn’t budge. I looked up as the door scraped open and a man came in, making no sound. I retreated into a far corner but he advanced. He came close and crouched on his heels; he lifted the heavy black hood from his shrouded head. Cold, gray, eyes captured my own green ones. I couldn’t look away and I felt as if he was looking into my soul, assessing my thoughts. I shivered and that one movement caused the connection to break. The candle that was once beside the bed was now in my hand and I slashed at the face so close to mine. He grasped my hand and I froze as he spoke, “There is no way you could possibly overpower me young child. I have many years of military training as well as many years as a fugitive. I know much more than you can comprehend.”
My hand shook in his cold, gray one. I studied his face. Short hair, just enough to cover his forehead, his eyes cold, his cheeks tan, though I don’t know where he could have gotten any sun. A hand like ice gripped mine, though I somehow managed to speak, “I have the right to know what you plan to do with me, you murderer.”
I spat the words in his unblinking face. The side of his mouth curled up, smooth as smoke, smug and I could see he was laughing at my attempt to be brave. “What could you possibly earn from kidnapping a sixteen year old girl? Hmm? Pleasure of seeing the look of fear on her face? Do you like scaring people? Because you don’t scare me.” I said, lifting my chin defiantly.
He released my hand and stood, “Your sixteen years old?”
He demanded of me. I lifted my chin further and his mouth tightened. In one motion he had lifted
his hood into place and reached for me. I screamed and kicked at his hands. He held a hand in the air, as if to backhand me and I quickly froze. He slowly reached down to my ankle and I heard a sharp click. He had released the chain from my ankle and pulled me up to a stand. He looked at me closely and said in a soft voice,
“Don’t say a word and you might live the rest of the hour.” I tried to pull my arm from him, but his grip was like steel. He shook me and said in a fierce whisper, “Are you listening to me? I’m trying to keep you alive you stupid girl.”
I easily spat back, “Why would you want to keep me alive? What am I to you?”
He glared at me and then snapped a chain around my wrist, hooking it to his own wrist. I pulled back and tried in vain to pull my wrist from the chain but I couldn’t. I quickly realized I was wasting my energy and stopped. He put a finger to my lips and glared at me until I nodded. He quickly swept us out the door and down the hall. I watched as two cloaked guards started after us and tugged on his sleeve. He whispered down to me, “I see them.”
Then turned around to face the two cloaked sentries. “Da’ra has sent for the girl and asked me to bring her to his chambers. Alone.”
The sentry on the right replied in a husky voice, “Thresh, the girl was supposed to stay in her chambers until dusk. That’s still three hours away. Although, you know that.”
Thresh rolled his eyes and started to turn away. Next thing I knew he was against the wall with a dagger to his throat and I was on the floor, arm stretched up because of the chain. Thresh smiled and reached slowly into his robe and brought out a roll of paper with a string around it. Handing it to the other sentry he smirked as the man standing over me motioned the one holding him to the wall, to back off once done reading. He stood straight and helped me up. I realized my arm was sore when he pulled me up with his steel grip. Clenching my teeth, I walked alongside him again.
Taking a maze of halls we reached a door. The door was a good seven and a half foot tall and it had three metal bars going across it. The handle was intricately carved as the head of a snake. That’s when I realized the door was covered in burns that were the shape of cobra heads. I shivered as Thresh knocked and it sent an echo all the way down the hall. A rattling came from the other side of the door and it opened. A flourished male face appeared and I almost giggled. He had hair that stuck straight up and a face that was covered in soot as if he had been staring up into the chimney. His clothes barely clung to his skinny frame; he had a naturally surprised look on his face. When he opened the door Thresh didn’t even wait for an invitation and strode right in, pushing past the surprised man and pulling him away from the door in order to slam the door closed before locking it. He quickly unlocked my chain and threw me to the floor. All kindness lost, well, what little there had been before. Turning on the small man still by the door, he spat, “You lied to me Da’ra. You told me she was over eighteen. You know she can’t have come into her powers so young.”
The man calmly looked at the fuming Thresh standing over me. “You don’t know what I know, either Thresh. She is young yes but as my men have reported she has.” That’s when he looked at me. “Show me girl, light a fire like you did the night we came for you. The night you were taken.”
I shook with fear under this once-funny looking man, “I don’t know what your talking about you freak.”
His hand sent me sprawling across the floor. Thresh came to my side and I cringed away from his touch. I felt my face as he inspected it and I could still feel the warmth and sting of the slap. Thresh gently removed my hand and peered closely. Then he turned on Da’ra. With quiet menace he told him, “If you strike her again it will be the last thing you ever do, this is not a threat, it is a promise.”
Da’ra shook as Thresh’s eyes made contact with his. He nodded and moved to help me up. I scrambled away from him. (Da’ra of course, not Thresh.) He slowly pulled his hand back and straightened. Then Thresh held a hand out and I took it instantly. He pulled me to his chest and I buried my head into his shoulder and sobbed. He stood there stroking my hair and enveloping me in a warm cocoon. There was nothing left of yesterday in me. I was someone I never wanted to be, I was, a witch.
Waking to a soft rocking motion, I was looked into Thresh’s eyes as he cradled me to his chest, carrying me somewhere. I must have fallen asleep after sobbing all my tears into his thick black cloak. He softly asked me, “Do you want to walk?”
I shook my head and buried my head into his warm chest. He laughed quietly and tightened his grip on me.
“You aren’t afraid of me anymore?”
I shook my head and mumbled something that even I couldn’t understand, half asleep already. He laughed a single laugh and we were both quiet until he reached a set of oak doors. He stopped to open them and I squirmed. “What are you doing? This isn’t my room Thresh.”
He shook his head and mumbled, “I know its not. That’s because they’re mine.”
I jerked up and he almost dropped me. “Careful! I don’t want to drop you.”
I instantly cowered under his intense gray eyes. He slowly turned the big crow-head shaped handle. I gasped as we entered his rooms. Yes rooms. As in more than one. Actually six as he told me as I struggled to look at everything at once. The window was huge and made from stained glass, the doors were made of solid pine. I sucked in a breath through my nose, enjoying
the rare scent, unable to get enough of it. He gently set me down on the front rooms couch and just watched me with no hint of embarrassment for about three minutes as I squirmed nervously under his icy gaze. Finally I snapped out, “What are you staring at Thresh? I know I don’t look perfect but still. I did just get kidnapped and slapped as well as covered in soot.”
He shook his head with the hint of a smile. “I was not looking at your oddities at this time, but instead I was wondering how a girl could look so beautiful and so… rugged at the same time.”
I blinked in surprise. He called me beautiful. This hunk of hard warrior, who would kill at a moments notice because a man struck a woman, had called me beautiful. I blinked again and he held a hand out to pull me from the couch. I took it and he led me through a maze of halls before coming to a door that was decorated in bubbles and mermaids pulling their hair across their chests. He pushed open the door and I gasped. The bathroom was huge. The bathtub and shower were not one thing but instead they came as two separate objects. The bathtub could have fit five people easily. Before I knew what he was doing, he had scooped me up into his arms and started to stride towards the bathtub, which had started to fill up as he flipped a switch by the door. I shrieked as he dumped me into it, clothes and all. I came up spluttering and he was sitting on the edge of the tub, laughing as he hefted a bar of soap in his hand. I glared at him, “You could have just showed me how to work it, that way I didn’t have to get my clothes wet.”
He just laughed, “Would you have preferred I had undressed you before dumping you in? I could still do it you know.”
I shrunk back into the far corner of the tub and ducked my head so my chin met the top of the water. He laughed and tossed the bar of soap he was still holding to me. I barely caught it and when I looked up he was standing at the door. He held a hand up. “You have twenty minutes or I will come get you myself. Take longer if you dare.” With a wink he left the room, closing the door with a click of finality. I wasted no time undressing and scrubbing my rough skin smooth with the tangy smelling soap. By the end of twenty minutes I was standing, shivering in a large fluffy towel, the smell of hot soapy water enveloping me. He walked into the room with no hesitation and I turned from the large window, with a view of the setting sun, sinking into the sea, to look at him. He himself must have taken a shower as well because his long brown hair was wet and slicked down. I backed away as he advanced on me. All I had on was a towel for God’s sake. I felt my back hit the cold window and he came close, slowly reaching out his hands as if to a scared animal, to cup my face gently. I couldn’t help it, I leaned into his embrace and he held me as I started to sob. I buried my head in the crook of his shoulder and I gripped handfuls of his shirt in my fists, his arms around me. If it hadn’t been for his arms I would have collapsed, right there, on the floor in front of this man I didn’t even know. He held me as if he
had known me his entire life and for some reason, I didn’t mind. Now, this may seem odd, but I had problems with touching people. Even my own “family” couldn’t hug me like this. I didn’t know what he was doing to my head and I don’t think I liked it too much. I instantly pulled away and shoved him away from me while I backed into the corner and crouched to bury my head between my knees. He didn’t look fazed in the slightest although he was on the floor about seven feet away from where we had been standing. And he was cradling his arm as if he had been burned. I lifted my head just a tiny bit and watched him watch me. His eyes didn’t show much but right then I could see the pain filling his eyes. Not emotional pain, but physical. It burned with a fiery passion in his eyes as he brought his arm closer to his chest. I slowly crawled up and made my way towards him, his grey eyes following me, watching me as I came closer. His arm came away easily as I gently grasped his wrist to examine his arm. I almost recoiled with horror. His arm had a hand print of burnt flesh, about where his elbow was. Right where I had held him. I gently placed my right hand above the burn, realization dawning on me with horror. It fit perfectly. I pulled my hand back to cover my mouth, leaning away from him.
“I burnt you. With my bare hands. I don’t even have a match, I swear I didn’t want to!” I started to sob and he held a hand out to comfort me, thought better of it and sat back, watching me drain my energy into tears, letting them hit the floor. Wasting every ounce of calm I had gathered, I sobbed like I never had before. Loud, choking things. His eyes closed and he rubbed a hand down his forehead, and across his face. His arms stretched out to gently pull my hands from my face. He lifted my head by the chin and said gently, “You should not be ashamed of what you can do. You are the first Fire Witch in almost a hundred years. You are one of the rarest creatures on this pathetic Earth. You are the only one of your kind. You, are also the most dangerous thing in this building. Including me.” He gave a small laugh, and that just caused more tears to run down my face. He pulled me close and made me look at the place where I had burned him. I didn’t look, and closed my eyes.
“Open your eyes and look. You will be surprised at what you find.”
I hesitated but he held out his arm for me to see. I looked, afraid that I would still see a handprint. But I didn’t, I saw clean skin, as if it had never been there. I looked at him, shocked.
“You see? This place is not normal. Nobody here is what they seem to be, not even Da’ra. He’s a fairy.” He gently said. I closed my eyes and opened them again, still not there. I didn’t look up as the door to the bathroom opened noisily. I could hear Thresh speaking to me gently but I didn’t hear the words, and then felt it as he picked me up. I realized that the towel was still tightly wound around my torso. As it was when I got out of the bath. I didn’t resurface until later that night.
I woke from my shocked state to find I had been dressed, in a white sleeping gown. It hugged my hips and was loose at my feet. It wasn’t something I would normally wear but I didn’t have anything else, so I would have to endure it for now. I don’t think I had much of a choice in the matter anyways since that’s when Thresh walked into the room, but that’s not what made me recoil, Da’ra was right behind him. Thresh held his arms out to me while Da’ra stood by the door, hands clasped behind his back. I didn’t go into his embrace; instead I jumped onto the bed and slid across it to the other side, crouching behind the dresser, glaring at them. Thresh simply stood there, and Da’ra said quietly, observing me, “I guess she doesn’t trust you as much as you thought Thresh. I think she’s actually scared of you.”
Thresh opened his mouth to speak, almost snarling at him, when I beat him to it. “It’s not him I’m scared of, it’s you, and I’m not scared of you, I simply hate you.”
Both the men’s eyebrows shot up at my poisonous tone, although Da’ra showed no other sign of anger except for turning red. Thresh was another story altogether, he was at my side in a second, gripping my wrist in an iron fist, yanking me from my spot and onto my feet. With gritted teeth he growled out, “Da’ra leave me and my, woman, alone please. I need to teach her manners, which were obviously never taught by her mother.”
I pulled away, with strength I didn’t know I had, and spit at him through clenched teeth, “My mother couldn’t teach me manners even if she wanted to, she is DEAD. In case you hadn’t noticed, I was a street rat when you found me, starving, about to be sent to prison for begging and stealing. And what in the hell do you mean by your woman?!? I am not yours!”
I ended this statement in a scream, panting in my anger, both men’s eyes were wide with surprise, with little anger left. I left them to think about that little outburst as I push Thresh out of my way, almost knocking him onto the bed, and walking into the next room. There was a blanket on the back of the big leather chair, and I didn’t pause in my step as I snatch it and throw it around me, walking into the cavernous hallway. My bare feet slap against the cool granite floor, hearing the giant door of Thresh’s rooms open and hear heavy boot steps running after me. I pick up my pace and turn at the next corner, hearing Thresh gaining on me. I duck into a room on my left and quietly close the door behind me, leaving a crack I can look through. I see as Thresh’s broad-shouldered shadow walk by, pausing slightly, listening. I stop breathing and then he moves on. I breathe out in a sigh of relief, counting to twenty before leaning on the wall behind me. Then the wall moves and I jump off it with a shriek, feeling something grip my upper arm and pull me into the warm chest of… “Thresh?” I exclaim, feeling his chest rumble with, what might have been laughter. I turned and looked up into his solid grey eyes. He wiped a tear from my cheek with the pad of his thumb, wiping it onto my blanket which was slipping from around my shoulders. I couldn’t help it. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and we slid to the floor in a crumpled heap, and screamed, as I buried my head into the crook of his
shoulder, his left hand holding the back of my neck and his right holding my own. I cried my eyes out for the third time, in the arms of a man whom I barely knew, yet trusted with my life. I don’t even know how long we sat there, me weeping, him holding my shaking shoulders. I felt as if my heart would burst in my chest if I cried any harder. He eventually, gently pushed me back and took the corner of his cloak and wiped my eyes. His eyes were saddened and he avoided my gaze. He finished getting my tears and he wiped a thumb beneath my eyes, checking for any he missed. He must not have found any because he sighed and finally looked me in the eyes. His eyes bore a strange truth and he looked at me with regret and sadness, and sympathy, his gaze stronger than my own. My eyes still watered slightly and I wiped away excess tears with the corner of his cloak. He didn’t speak, just held me, his eyes did all the talking. We sat there for I don’t know how long, just me crying and him comforting. I hadn’t done this since my mother died. With anyone. Mainly because I never had anyone to hold me. Sometime later, I raise my head and look at his chest, refusing to look in his eyes.
“So, are you going to explain what you meant when you called me yours? Or do I have to scream again?”
He chuckled, “Please don’t, you have great lungs, and my ears are still ringing slightly.” He then lost all humor, face becoming wary, “As for what I meant, I’m not sure you should know right this moment, maybe when you become more…comfortable… with me.”
I jerked my head up at the way he said “comfortable”. Almost, as if he meant we would be getting to know each other, very well. I stared at him for a second. “Explain. Now.”
He shook his head.
“Fine.” I took a deep breath, preparing to scream again. Slapping his hand over my mouth he exclaimed,
“Ok ok! I’ll tell you. When I found you, I sent my men for you and they, well, they assumed I wanted you. So they told Da’ra that you were, my fiancé. When I heard this I had to agree because, well, its basically the only thing keeping you alive. If you were just some witch, then Da’ra would have had you killed. Him and witches don’t get along. I honestly don’t know why not…. But, that’s what I meant. We are engaged.”
He said it in a blur. And my head swam. The words, echoed in my head. I couldn’t stop hearing, “engaged, fiancé, killed”
Next thing I knew I was on my feet, staring down at him. Trying to speak, my mouth opened and closed, no sounds exiting. Then I was running again. The blanket lost in the flight. I turned corners with abandon. Doors flying past in blurs. I ran for what seemed like forever, before reaching a dead end, with a tiny window, just big enough to fit my arm through. I stand, head pressed against the wall, staring out at the ocean, the sun almost set, my arm stretched, fingers apart towards the sun, towards freedom. Tears fell down my face,
but these were different. They weren’t just warm. They burned. Wiping them off with my hand, I look at them. They were red, and shimmered. All of a sudden anger welled up in me. I take a step away from the wall, and thrust my arms out, and screamed. Fire shot from my fingertips, and my hair started to burn. But it didn’t singe and curl up. It was just, there. I turned and punched the wall, leaving a melted piece of metal on the wall where the grate had been. Turning at a sound behind me, I see Thresh, eyes wide, and his clothes smoking from the heat. But he didn’t back away, instead he held a hand out, and reached for me. Thrusting a hand towards him I flicker a tiny bolt of fire at his feet. He jumps back and scowls, then says,
“Stop, right now. I will not stand for this temper tantrum. You need-“
I cut him off with a scream, “Temper Tantrum?! You think this is a Temper Tantrum?? What do you expect me to do when I’m all of a sudden engaged, to some 25 year old creep, who stole me from where I was, and thrust me into some new place, full of witches, fairies, and other creatures? How would you handle being a witch? Not just any witch though, oh no, the kind that people have feared for centuries! The kind people killed off for centuries! I am exactly what people fear, and if they want to fear me, I will give them something to fear!”
I scream this, and he winces as I throw some kind of fire at the wall, leaving a scorched hole. I scream until my lungs give out, and then I sit on the stone floor, which was no longer cold, and sobbed. My hair still had tendrils of fire in the ends, and my fingernails, were red. The tears that rolled down my face, were hot, and my clothes barely covered me from being burnt away. I sat there, a scorched being, smoking like a banked chimney. The stone underneath me was black, and scorched, and in some places, still red hot. I reach out and touch the red, it was hot. My fingers smoked as they burned, but they instantly started healing, the fire moving into my fingers, and sealing the wounds. Seconds later my veins glowed once and then I look at my fingers. Pink, smooth and unscarred. Shaking, I flick my fingers, and they instantly light up, but this time with soft blue fire. I turned my hand and flicked it at the stones, a tiny bolt hits the ground and a tiny blue bird takes flight. I watch as she turns in an intricate dance, before landing on Thresh’s shoulder. He flinches as it lands, expecting a burn. But she was cold, and she rubs her head against his cheek. Slowly he reaches out and touches a finger to the top of her head. With a cluck she touches her beak against his finger and breaks into beautiful song. His song. A song of desperation, fear and heartbreak. But she also sings of, beauty, love and kindness. Her song ended and we were both staring at her as she slowly flew down to his lap, and settled down.
“She is yours, now Thresh. Love her, take care of her. She will always be with you. She is your guardian.” I whisper these words and he looks up at me. My tears fall no more, and the fire has been banked. I make another flicker of blue, and a large blue wolf stands next to me.
“Darling will be with me, and he will bring me back to you, but at this moment. I need to walk.
Far from here. Far from you.” I walk past his shocked face, and don’t look back. The corners turned themselves, and next thing I knew I was at the door I knew was the door to the outside. Two guards stood to either side and they both stepped forward, prepared to stop me but Darling, stepped forward and turned from blue, to red hot, snarling. I put a hand up and he backs down, still slightly red, and the guards stop, and allow me to pass. The doors opened on their own accord, and I walked into the world I had prepared to leave behind. The sun burned my eyes, and I stopped, hissing. As they adjusted I looked around. The sea, was all around me. I looked down and saw a bridge leading to an island. That was where I was meant to go. My feet moved of their own accord, and Darling walked silently alongside me. Reaching a hand down, I bury it in his scruff. The feel of fur so real, I almost believed he was real. He crooned and we walked along, hand in scruff, and reached the bridge. One foot in front of the other. The wood under my feet smoldered, but didn’t burn. I look behind me and see burnt footprints, following me. And just to the side, a trail of paws, following, like a guardian angel. Continuing onward, I lift my chin, and stare at the sun, daring it to set and take me with it.
Thresh POV
The hall smoldered, her anger still thrumming through me, burning my blood. The tiny bird on my knee chirped, and I stared down at her, my gaze wide. The top of her head on the underside if my palm, and I felt a slight warmth. Almost as if she was real. I waved my hand as if to pass through her and she chirped angrily, turning a slight orange color, as I pushed her off my knee in the process.
“Sorry, Sorry! I just had to, you know, check.” I ended weakly and dropped my head into my hands. “Oh God what have I done? Me and my big mouth, just made the only thing that could
possibly heal this world, walk out the door. And I didn’t even do anything to stop her!”
I slammed my hand down on the stone floor, and jerked it back, hissing in pain. The floor was still hot. But not where I sat, everything around me was still steaming. Meaning she had enough control to stop from barbequing me to death during her break down. That gave me enough hope that her words, promising to return, were true. But I still can’t believe she thinks I’m 25, even though I’m only 19. I think she may have gotten that from me calling her a child, I just feel a lot older than I am. Standing I looked around. Thank the Goddess this place is stone. Or else it would have been in rubble around me. The walls were black, and the metal torch holders, and window grates were solidifying, left in un-nameable shapes upon the walls and floor. I closed my eyes and sighed, rubbing my temples. Standing I look around me at the destruction. I had to grin a little, she looked so amazing. Alight with fire, eyes aglow, hair swirling. Her shift, curling into pieces around her, left in shreds along her lovely body. The swirling of air, and fire around her, I could feel the power from her screams still, echoing through my body, and mind. Closing my eyes I took a giant breath and rubbed my forehead. The little bird on my knee chirped quietly, alerting me that someone was approaching me. I raised my head to see a woman, standing there. Looking too calm, for the rubble she stood barefoot in, was red hot. I could smell the burning flesh, but then again, she couldn’t feel it. She normally didn’t worry about getting hurt, it healed in seconds anyways. I nodded,
“Sister” I greeted her. She said nothing but inclined her head in greeting, eyes on the walls, and floor. I didn’t say anything for a while, just watched as she walked around, examining the walls, her feet hissing every time they hit a hot spot. She finally stopped in front of me and held a hand out to help me up on my feet. I stumbled up, and the little fire bird, propped herself up in my hair. My sister gazed at her in that unhinged way she has. I learned a long time ago, that when she looks at you like that, you just need to wait for what she has to say. Everything she says has a purpose. It must, for she is the Oracle. The first one in almost a thousand years. Her eyes dilated, and her face became a mask of horror. Her voice deepened, with a double timbre:
“She rides the sun, with no hope.
He swims the sea, with no air.
They have the world in their hands, but the decision remains.
Close the fist, or open it.”
She closed her eyes and swayed for a moment. Opening them, she looked at me as if nothing had happened.
I stared at her in askance, but she shook her head, turning to leave. I grabbed her arm and turned her gently back towards me.
“Allessa please, I need to know what it means” She shook her head, tugging her arm free, “You know I can’t Thresh. I don’t know what I said, you know that as well as I do.”
I slumped to the floor again, muttering the poem over and over to memorize it, my head in my hands. I feel a hand on my shoulder and look up into my sister's green eyes.
“Thresh, you mustn't tell her your powers, for that would be both yours, and her own doom. Tell me the Prophecy, for I think I can help you find the answer.”
I repeat the phrase that is soon to haunt me, and her eyes widen.
“She rides the sun, that must be her, honestly brother, you haven’t even introduced me yet, and you are to be betrothed? You are obviously the one swimming the sea without air. The last part though… I do not understand it, for you two have just barely met.” She stared at me with confusion and something close to pity. I hang my head, “I am sorry Sister, but i can not introduce you until I know her name as well.” Refusing to look her in the eyes I stand, almost a full head taller than her and outweighing her by at least 50 pounds.
