British Royal Family: From the King Offa to King Alfred the Great
The Monarchy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was first established in 757 AD by King Offa of Mercia.
King Offa was born c. 730 AD. He took power of England in 757 AD. King Offa was a member-and only English King to be so-of the House of Mercia. He married Cynethryth, and they had 3 children, Aelfflaed, Ecgfrith, and Eadburh. His reign ended upon his death on 29 July 796. It wasn’t until 802 AD that the Monarchy was restored.
The Monarchy was restored in 802 by King Egbert (Ecgberht) of Wessex. Born c. 769 to King Ealhmund of Kent. He is the 34th Great-Grandfather to the current Queen, Queen Elizabeth II. His Majesty was the first monarch of the House of Wessex during its time in the English Monarchy, but he was not the Founder of the House. Egbert married Redburh of Francia and they had one child Aethelwulf-Historians are divided on who Egbert’s wife really was. Most no longer recognise Redburh as his wife, although a 15th Century Chronicle, that is now in the possession of Oxford University, states that his wife was in fact Redburh of Francia. His reign ended on his death in 839 AD. King Egbert of Wessex was succeeded by his son Aethelwulf of Wessex.
Aethelwulf of Wessex was born c.795 in Aachen. He succeeded his father Egbert of Wessex upon his death in 839. He, like his father, was a member-and at one time head of house-of the House of Wessex. His Majesty is the 33rd Great Grandfather to the current Queen, Queen Elizabeth II. Aethelwulf was married two times, first to Osburh of Hampshire who was the mother of his 5 sons and 1 daughter, and second to Judith, Margravine of Francia. On his death on 13 January 858, his son Aethelbald of Wessex succeeded him.
Aethelbald, King of Wessex succeeded his father upon his death on 13 January 858. He was born c. 831. Upon succeeding his father, he married his father’s widow, Judith, Margravine of Francia. He like his father and grandfather was a member of the House of Wessex. His majesty passed away on 20 December 860, and was succeeded by his brother Aethelbert.
His Majesty King Aethelbert of Wessex was born c. 834. Aethelbert succeeded his brother Aethelbald on 20 December 860. He had 2 illegitimate sons, Aldhelm and Aethelweard. He like his Father, Grandfather, and brothers, was a member of the House of Wessex. Aethelbert died in 866 and was succeeded by his brother Aethelred I.
King Aethelred I of Wessex was born c. 837 and succeeded his brother on his death in 860. He was a member of the House of Wessex as his brothers, Father, and Grandfather were. He married Wulfrida, Queen Consort of Wessex. The pair had 2 sons, Aethelhelm and Aethelwold. Aethelhelm would have succeeded his father but was too young to succeed at the time. His Majesty died 23 April 871 and was succeeded by his brother Alfred the Great of Wessex.
Alfred the Great, of Wessex succeeded his brother Aethelred I of Wessex upon his death on 23 April 871. He was born c. 839. King Alfred was the 32nd Great-Grandfather to Elizabeth II. He was also a member of the House of Wessex. His Majesty was married to Ealhswith of Mercia and they had five children, Aelfthryth, Aethelflaed, Aethelgifu, Edward, and Aethelweard. He died 26 October 899 and was succeeded by his son, His Majesty King Edward the Elder.

I was inspired by my genealogy, as I have ancestors that came to America from England. I have always been interested in my Genealogy and the Genealogy of others. I have also been interested in the Royal Family of Great Britian. This is only the first installment in a series of Articles that I intend to submit.
