The Song
I step onto my porch step, after seven continuous hours of mathematics, biology, world history, band, and English. The first step is silent, the second step cracks, the third step creaks, and the last step lets out a long groan. When the groan is finished, I hear a new noise. A long, low howl of a dog. It is not sad, it is not lonely, it is happy. I continue across the porch until I am at the screen door. Now there’s another howl. Two dogs are singing their joy in harmony. One taking the higher pitch, and the other remaining low. I place my hand on the knob and twist. Now there are lyrics to this song. There is a high pitched, rythmic barking. I swing the door open and there are three dogs, waiting for me, with uncontrollable tails, crying and squeling, for I have just come home for another evening full of snacks, snuggles, and love.
