I Am More Than a Stereotype
Being an Arab I have been known as a student or a person that is irresponsible, independent, and could not be taken seriously. I was and I still am thought of as spoiled and that I do not take responsibility for all my wrongs or mistakes. So many times by so many different people I was told that I depend on people more than depending on myself. For example one time I was asked by a friend why I did not complain about doing my bed and cleaning my room? So I answered I have a maid that does it for me. I hear stories like this quite often. My mom just told me a story about an Arabian Boy studying abroad that was asked by his Professor to open the curtain's in the classroom, the boy had trouble opening the curtain so she laughed and said that he was uncivilized and spoiled because he had never opened curtains before. It is sad that people still think this way. No one should judge a person on their status. Just because he had trouble opening a curtain dose not make him irresponsible, spoiled, or independent. She did not see the fact that he made it to a respected University and he had to work hard and study hard in able to achieve it. It was not handed to him or anyone that has been stereotyped as spoiled we might have not made our beds and cleaned our rooms but no one should deny the fact that we actually work for what we have, and we work hard. Still we are stereotyped as spoiled rich kids or uncivilized arabs. I wish that people would understand that it is not oil money that makes our bank account statements but it is hard work. When will we realize that stereotyping different people by their looks, skin color, or how high their class is, is not right, we are all created by the same god and in the end of the day we are all the same in gods eyes and it should be in our eyes too.
