The beginning of summer was very emotional for many people in our school. I remember trying as hard as I could to meet up with my friends and the people that were leaving. Two of my best friends were leaving that summer. Even though it was quite tough, I organised to see them one more time.

The day before they left, a group of people went swimming. It was the last day we were all going to be together ever again. Avoiding the topic, pretending that nothing was going to change, was the easiest way to go about it. Throughout the day we were all jumping around, playing games, and acting crazy, almost forgetting about how people were leaving.

Finally, it was time to say our goodbyes to Hudson and Jack. Not a single person was nearly as happy as they were just twenty minutes earlier. Trying to act cheerful and optimistic was extremely difficult. Although no one was showing it, I could tell everyone was upset on the inside. Once we had said goodbye, I left thinking of all the wonderful memories we had… The ones we had together.

That evening, while I was on my iPad, I received a message from one of my friends saying he could see us one more time, that it was possible for us to meet at the field at six am the following morning. I was buzzing with joy, yet sadness was in the air . Although I could see him again, my friends and I had already seen my other friend for the last time. I set my alarm and went straight to bed, eager to wake up early, forgetting about the little sleep I knew I would get.

As we all arrived at the field, my friend and I started to play around. Continuing to have fun just like we had the night before, we began talking about completely random topics and playing a sport we couldn’t live without, football.

Unfortunately it was time for him to leave for the very last time; everyone at the field was trying to hold back their tears. The week before everyone came together to create a card signed just for my best friend. After we said our final goodbyes, he left. Watching him walk off slowly, we all stood there; then, just like the night before, I wandered back home, quietly thinking about all our previous memories.

My two best friends had moved and they weren’t coming back.

This piece was about what happened when two fo my best friends left. As an international school student, I have realized people come and go all the time. The summer I talked about though, was one of my most memorable experiences of saying goodbye to a friend/friends for the last time.
