Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not pray for the stilling of my pain, but for the heart to conquer it.

The round moon fills our orchard with a creamy glow. Enough light to see by but plenty of shadow to hide in. My brother and I race through the ghostly apple trees until the sound of crickets and coyotes is joined by the crackling conversations from powerlines high above. Our eyes, sparkling with moonlight and adrenaline, stare high and wide towards the tippy-top of the skyscraper-tall metal beast. Madmen ready to conquer, we share manic grins. My bare foot finds his laced fingers, and he boosts me up to the first tier.
