Whether it is fast paced nu metal or laid back 80s rock, music is one of the most important parts of high school for me. Music distracts me from any stress that school is causing and helps me focus on what I’m working on at the moment. With all the challenging classes and after school activities, music helps keep me grounded in the here and now.

Nu metal might not sound like it helps me focus on school work, but I always find that the louder the music, the better I focus. I really can’t explain why, but being able to focus on just the music and homework makes focusing so much easier. While working on my AP stats homework before I have to leave for work, bands like Slipknot help me block out any distractions and do my best on the work. With a full schedule, focusing just a little better can be a huge help.

Beyond helping me focus while working on schoolwork, music helps pass the time. Listening to a new album after work or before school is a really fun activity to pass the time. Hearing Pink Floyd’s album, Dark Side of the Moon for the first time after school is one of my favorite memories. The flowing melodies of “Great Gig in the Sky” to the sharp intro of “Time” were what really got me into listening to music all the time. Hearing so many different melodies and styles from different artists is such a fun experience.

Some teachers may not like Airpods because they distract students and make them be less productive, but I’d argue the exact opposite. Music helps students lead less stressful lives and helps them focus on what they need to get done. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be a student in this day and age without music.
