Goro Akechi - A Descriptive Essay (Persona 5 Spoilers!!!)
In the current years, video games have become more than just a form of entertainment. They have become a form of art; They tell stories, create communities, and a lot of effort is put into them. Development teams pour their hearts and souls into their creations, and that’s what makes video games so unique today. One example of this is a video game called Persona 5. Persona 5 is the latest entry of the Persona series done by a company named ATLUS. Each installment is different and they all have their own different sets of stories and characters, but they all share the same themes; teenagers dealing with supernatural happenings.
Persona 5 is a very popular game worldwide. The mechanics of the game, soundtrack, and visual style are praised heavily. However, the most overlooked aspect of the game is its characters. Persona 5’s characters are very unique and they all have different lifestyles and personalities, they almost feel real. The most interesting character, however, is none other than a boy named Goro Akechi.
Goro Akechi is a particularly special character for a number of reasons. For starters, the foreshadowing of his character is done surprisingly well. He turns out to be behind a lot of terrible incidents that have happened in the game, and the writers flashback almost all of the foreshadowing when he is revealed to be a traitor. This took many by surprise and communities often debate whether Akechi is a good or bad character. Just from his actions, he has split the community into several opinions. It’s fascinating how a fictional character’s attitude can stir arguments into fans of the game.
Akechi’s personality is also one of the leading factors of his uniqueness. In the beginning of the game, you don’t learn his name yet. The game dubs him as “Pleasant Boy” before revealing his name. His voice is also quite calm and collected, which exemplifies his personality much more. He’s also a young detective working with the police, but is still in high school. This can make the player infer that he handles a lot of responsibilities while also staying calm and welcoming to others. Over the course of the story, Akechi is revealed to be quite independent, charming, and popular with young girls. Some of the protagonist’s friends in the game are quite jealous of Akechi and express their distaste toward his confident behavior, but only the protagonist really gets to know his true self. You often encounter the young detective at random places, usually the cafe you live in. He will usually share his feelings with you and he even reveals to you that his mother died when he was quite young and his father abandoned him, leaving him to be passed around in foster care until he decided to take care of himself. The subtle yet intriguing bond between the protagonist and Akechi is quite interesting and is something that is often overlooked.
Since Akechi is revealed to be a force of evil in the later parts of the story, you battle him with your teammates. After you win, he breaks down and he expresses great remorse and regret, wishing he had met the protagonist sooner so he wouldn’t do the terrible things he did. He is then faced by another impending threat; an illusion of himself. This illusion is how his corrupt father envisioned him. A toy, a service to get rid of later, a mere useless pawn. After the real Akechi finds out that is how his father sees him, he breaks into shambles. His plan all along was to take revenge against his father for ruining his life and causing his mother’s suicide. He attempted to work alongside his father to get close to him and then kill him, but his father caught on to his plan and wanted to get rid of him anyways after Japan’s election for “knowing too much”. After the illusion of Akechi threatens the real Akechi and the main cast, Akechi sacrifices himself quite nobly and lets the team escape. The protagonist and his friends then show great and deep feelings of sorrow for Akechi, and even though he caused so much trouble, they blamed it on his father instead for pulling the strings, dubbing him as “just another victim of cruel adults”. Akechi’s tragic end makes the player feel quite empty and remorseful, wishing they could’ve done something as well, but there was no option to do so.
Goro Akechi isn’t just a fictional character from a popular video game. He’s a character who makes you feel something and feel different. You can love him, hate him, or do neither of those things, but in the end he will always leave his mark on the audience.

I am simply a girl who takes passion in fictional media. I deeply connect with fiction and find it as a form of escapism. Many find it strange, but I enjoy talking about video games and anime quite a lot.
Dealing with hardships such as depression and anxiety, making friends can be quite hard, so I tend to connect with people who aren't even real. It's kind of sad when you think about it, but it makes me happy anyways.
The reason why I wrote about this character in particular is because I am very passionate when it comes to writing about him and how I feel about him.
I hope you enjoyed this article!
