Underestimating Myself
When i first walked into the gym I could feel the tension. Wrestling Pontiac was never challenging, but keeping their team calm always was. When we walked into our gym we sat across the mat from them. The other captains and I walked onto the mat. I still remember how squishy the mat was. "They look scared!" shouted their coach. "ignore them" I said, surprising the other wrestlers as i am usually the quietest. Our captains met up with theirs in the middle of the mat. I knew who my match was already. He was a captain for the Pontiac team. While in the middle the captains did they usual rituals. We shook hands with our opponents and did the coin toss. We won the toss, therefor we got the first choice. As I warmed up for my match I would look across the mat occasionally. Each time I would be met by my opponents glare. I got more and more nervous as my match approached. When my match was finally ready to start I stepped onto the mat. This time it felt more stiff, and cold. When I shook my opponents hand he squeezed more than anyone I have ever wrestled before. When I looked into his eyes he looked like a rabid dog. When the match began I heard the whistle blow, and nothing else. I couldn't hear the crowd, my coach, my team, nothing. I took my first shot right away and surprised him with a blast double. The shot put him right to his back. I threw in my double grape vines and put him in a headlock. Within 30 seconds of the match it was over. I had pinned him. This made me realize something. I could do anything that i set my mind to and worked hard for.
