The Swim

“Grab a life jacket!” Cody shouted over the sound of the rushing water. “I will be alright, don’t worry!” I shouted back. As I said that, I took off after Tyler towards the slide. I stopped in my tracks when I heard my dad’s voice calling my way. When I turned around, he said “Don’t run, the floor is slippery.” I nodded in response. I took a moment to look around, Wow this is really neat! We have the whole swimming pool to ourselves! I looked over and I saw a sign sitting on the floor, it read: “Caution! Wet Floor.” Then I walked over to the slide.

As I reached the slide’s ladder, I stared in awe at the massive blue slide that goes around in loops that make it shaped like a small spring. Anxious to go down the slide, I grabbed the blue metal ladder that felt cool against my skin, and started to ascend. As I was climbing I looked down. Everybody looked like little ants. Man this slide is tall! I thought to myself. When I finally reached the top I saw Tyler’s mom standing right in front of me. “If you lay down while going down the slide you will go faster but-” she didn’t have time to finish, I was already gone.
“AHHHH!” I screamed with thrill like I was riding a rollercoaster. Laying down does make you go faster! I thought as I went around in loops. The water roaring in my ear, the cool air against my face as I sliced through it, the thrill of excitement overwhelming, Man this is awesome! I thought to myself until I landed in the water at the bottom with a SPLASH! I tried to swim up to the surface but I couldn’t... I just kept sinking!
I kept struggling to swim up but I couldn’t. I am going to die! I thought to myself as my muscles began to tire. Where is the lifeguard that was at his post when I landed in the water? I wondered. I kept struggling until my limbs were to tired to keep up the fight. I started to sink farther down into the water as my mind was racing with fear and sadness. As my lungs started to burn from holding my breath so long and my vision started to blur and get dark, I fought it as best as I could and as long as I could. Just as I started to give up, I saw my dad swimming to me. Luckily my dad was a strong swimmer and was able to get to me just in time and pulled me up to the surface where I gasped for air.
When I sat up, I looked at the lifeguard post; he was sitting there perfectly dry. I felt anger swell up inside me but then I calmed down when I remembered that I was still alive. I really need to start being more cautious around things that can be dangerous and follow the rules if there are any, no matter how much I am confident in myself. Ever since this experience I follow all the rules as much as I can and I am cautious of what can be dangerous around me and my actions.
