Girls Gymnastics Tries New Tactics
Starting November 9, 2009, half of the North Campus east gym will be devoted to my school’s girls’ gymnastics team.
Girls that plan on participating in the upcoming season are setting up equipment, including the spring loaded floor exercise, wired uneven bars, stable beam, and heavy set vault. The coaches help by retrieving equipment they rented to private gyms during the summer.
The tasks are tough and, needless to say, a pain in the butt. But they allow the girls to bond and build strength for the weeks to come.
Coaches Bob and Jenna decided that they would try dedicating one full week to working each event only to help the new girls on the team. This allows them to get a feel for each event and pick which one they favor.
After four weeks the girls will choose which events to focus on for the competition season.
“You can really tell which event comes easily to each girl,” says sophomore Allison “we’re all finding our place in the gym.”
