Mi Familia

When I think about my family, I often think about famous families of five and think of how the members of those families compare to the members of my family. The Simpsons and the Griffin family from Family Guy immediately come to mind. I recently rewatched Incredibles 2 on my flight back to Chicago from Paris, and all I could think about was how my family and the Parr family are alike. Obviously I am not part of a super family, but the character traits of the family members as well as the family structure draws similarities to the people in my own family. Bob Parr, also known as Mr. Incredible is the man of the house. As the father of 3 children, he has to be strong, physically and mentally. Although Mr. Incredible and my dad are somewhat vertically challenged, they are jacked, and their personality is even bigger than them. Their humor caught the attention of their future wives, Susan Parr and my mom respectively. Both my mom and Susan Parr are very smart and understanding. After all, Mrs. Incredible’s superpower is being flexible. When her husband is away handling business, the moms have to make sure that all of the kids are taken care of. This can be hard, especially when the kids have a wide range of personalities and maturity levels. There is a scene in the movie that I feel perfectly encapsulates the characteristics of each of the three children in both families. The Parr family children include Violet, a moody teen, Dash, a hotshot middle schooler, and Jack-Jack, an impressionable toddler. The family is getting ready to sit down for dinner, and the first thing that happens is Violet making sure that Dash washes his hands with soap before getting his food. Violet then starts the conversation by talking about what they all did today, and how it was controversial (illegally used superpowers). Violet tries to justify it to her parents, with Dash agreeing with her and making witty side comments. Jack-Jack doesn't really know what is going on, but he also tries to side with the kids. Mr. Incredible tries to be reasonable, and he agrees that using their powers was not a wrong thing to do. Mrs. Incredible, however, disagrees with that idea but doesn't want to dive too deep into a debate and wants to eat dinner in peace. The variety in personalities complement each other well, and I feel there is a strong parallel between my family and the Parr’s.
