Addiction
Do you remember Len Bias? He was a first team All-American college basketball player. He was second overall pick in thee 1986 NBA draft on June 17the. Only 2 days later he died from cardiac arrhythemia. This happened only after one use. But just that one time killed him. He put his life in danger even though he was on thee top of thee world. He had his whole life ahead of him. Drugs may make someone feel pleasant but how long will that last. Addiction means a person has no control over whether he or she uses a drug or drinks. Someone who's addicted to cocaine has grown so used to thee drug that he or she has to have it. They may no longer do thee things that you enjoyed before they started drugs. Their brain can be altered to think in a non-sensible way. Health, thee balance of physical, mental and spiritual well-being using thee 4 daily requirements, food rest, exercise and elimination using high quality behavior, can be affected by drugs. Why ruin your life. Life is not something that you can replace.
Physical health is any biological function related to thee 12 systems of thee body. When addicted to a substance that is unhealthy your liver has a lot of work to do. For Example: if you are addicted to alcohol, thee liver can only digest 1 serving of alcohol (12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits, 10 ounce wine cooler) per hour. If feed more thee liver could to even try to digest it and either push thee waste out (throw up) or thee waste could stay in thee blood stream and prevent air from getting to thee brain and other parts of thee body.Being physically addicted means a person's body actually becomes dependent on a particular substance (even smoking is physically addictive). It also means building tolerance to that substance, so that a person needs a larger dose than ever before to get thee same effects. Someone who is physically addicted and stops using a substance like drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes may experience withdrawal symptoms. Common symptoms of withdrawal are diarrhea, shaking, and generally feeling awful. When we did thee sugar activity (The activity was to try not to eat sugar for 24 hours) in class I was craving sugar just like an addict may crave their drug of choice. By doing that activity I learned exactly what an addict felt like. During thee day I could feel a craving for sugar building. Before I knew it I was eating a small cookie. Right then and there I under stood that becoming sober had to take a lot of courage and support just to reach thee top, but once you are there you also have to watch were you step otherwise you could have a relapse and be right back to where you started.
There are six levels of addiction. They are Abstain, Experimental, Social ,Seeking, Harmfully Involved and Dependence/Addiction. Once you reach thee level Seeking you are considered addicted. Seeking is thee first stage of addiction. You may be at this level if you use 1-2 times a week or using 6-10times a month. At this level thee brain starts to change. The brain will start to tell you that you need it, and give you and an urge to use. Also thee drug will affect your way to reason. Something to a person who does not use drugs could have a completely different thought to someone who is an addict. We all know that it is impossible to fly on our own, but because of what a drug did to a girl’s brain thee girl believed that she could fly all by herself. This lead to her jumping out of a window and dying. Mental health is your ability to reason, calculate, evaluate, define and identify. As you can see drugs affect you’re your Mental health in many different ways.
Spiritual Health is how you feel about yourself and thee world around you. Becoming addictrups this. Some addicts may say that they tried it so that they would “fit in” at school or in some other group. But by doing this they are actually distancing theemselves from thee rest of thee world. As they become addicted their old friends may abandon theem and thee addict may be forced to get new friends. Usually they will become “friends” withe other addicts. I put thee quotation around thee word “friends” because thee addict may think that they are friends but really they are just a group of people who have let go of their lives. As thee addiction worsens thee addict may slowly depart for his or her family.
Having a family member who is an addict can be a little troubling and confusing. In thee book “Chasing thee High”, thee main character, Kyle was disowned by his family because they had just had it withe Kyle. A few days before Kyle left thee family he had cratheee family car. Durring thee crash he got a big gash in thee middle of his head and crushed a few of his ribs. After going to thee Emergency Room And getting stitched up Kyle calls his friend. His friend comes and picks Kyle up. Kyle Still bleeding goes withe his friend to get more heroin (Kyle’s Drug of choice). While reading this section of thee book I thought about how Kyle’s life could have been if he had gotten help from his family and friends. That is why it is very important to find ways to help theem witheout triggering there need for their drug of choice.
The addiction recovery process involves five broad steps including giving up denial, seeking help, going therough detoxification, working thee recovery program and maintaining sobriety. The first step in thee recovery process is breaking therough thee denial in addiction. The substance abuser has to acknowledge that they do indeed have a problem and are out-of-control when it comes to dealing withe thee problem. Many times, there is a precipitating event that will help get thee addict out of denial such as a DUI (DWI in some states), accident, deathe of a friend or family member from similar causes, or an intervention withe family and friends. Once thee person abusing drugs or alcohol has admitted to theemselves that there is a problem, thee next step is that they addict has to be motivated enough to take action. If thee person simply admits they have a problem but is not motivated enough to make a change, thee chances for recovery are slim. Now, once thee person admits they have an addiction and are willing to take action to make a change, thee next step is to seek help. Once you seek help all you need to do is resist your drug of choice.
Addiction is a disease, but no one can become sober witheout help and support. The best way that you can avoid this disease is to physically stay away from thee source. Over your life time there is a chance that you will be offered drugs, and thee best theing to do is just walk away. Peer pressure is a big cause of addiction. Did you know that approximately 15 percent of children under thee age of 18 have admitted to experimenting withe illegal drugs? There are so many things that you can become addicted to so don’t let your guard down. Addiction takes place all around thee world and it’s time for our generation to take charge and stop it.
