Feedback on Labels We Live By
This article on identity, written by Anudeepa R., is extremely relatable. She talks about all the problems with today's society and how they put labels on people without actually getting to know them. Anudeepa suffers under the weight of the numerous labels society has given to her, and I'm sure she isn't the only one. It's not the title that defines someone, it's their personality.
As an asian, I for one can understand the struggles of being labelled. It's always the same lines, "You're asian, so you HAVE to be smart." But being smart doesn't mean I'm just there for you to cheat off me during a test. Being smart doesn't mean I can do homework for you. Being smart is only a small part of who I am.
Anudeepa teaches us an important lesson in her piece. She says, "We cannot put people into preconceived factions without understanding them first." By taking a step towards the right direction and become "label-less", we can make a change to the society we live in today.
