Feedback on "My Rapist Is Going to Prom"
“My Rapist Is Going to Prom” is a poem by “Melody”, about an individual getting raped, and seeing her rapist go to prom. The speaker tells the reader how much she wanted to go to prom, ever since she was a little girl.
This piece captures the humanity in rape victims. Even though her best friend knew about the rape and the rapist, she never spoke up about it. She’s even seen attending the prom with the speaker’s rapist. This brings light to the fact that some rapists don't face severe consequences even when they’ve been caught red-handed. It may not seem like a big deal that the narrator doesn't get to go to prom, but it creates a sense of helplessness. Her rapist stole her life from her, in addition to her best friend! Rape is never the victim’s fault.
