I really appreciated Amita's viewpoint of her brothers condition in "Autism is not a tragedy". Speaking as someone with an older brother diagnosed with autism, it is difficult. Not to "deal" with the condition, but to deal with everyone's criticsm. When she says, "Another misconception about people with autism is that they are incapable of being artsitic or intelligent," I immediatley think of my brother who is the smartest person in my family, he excelled during school, and learned to play the piano beautifully all by himself. He can map out whole cities for you and remembers everyone he's ever met. I am so proud of all his accomplishments and who he has grown to be as a person. It isn't fair to see how others view him judgingly in public, just as Amita says,"They only see his diagnosis." Thank you Amita for writing so vividly about autism and making other people understand that it is so much more than a simple diagnosis.
