My first time reading "White Wine" by Sylvia was a bit confusing, me stumbling upon whether it was from the point of view from the child or the mom. However, it had a deeper meaning than what I expected. During her childhood, Sylvia had to take care of her sick mom who was addicted to alcohol. Constantly, Sylvia was intoxicated with the horrible smell, driving herself to not even want to see her own mother.

Though it is known that alcohol negatively affects your health, people can't help but be addicted to it. It's the same on how children can't help but be the daughters or sons to alcoholics. Through their life, they have to suffocate in the hated smell. Like Sylvia says, "I walk back inside and spray lavender Febreeze in a failed attempt to get rid of the smell."

Can becoming addicted to alcohol be genetic? I hope that Sylvia's mom and other alcoholics learn to control the amount of alcohol they consume. I believe that there is always a way to quit.
