"The Pawn" by Peyton Cassel
"The Pawn" by Peyton Cassel is about the underlying motives of a politician’s wife. This story gives a “behind-the-scenes” outlook of a politician’s life. It shows how even the perfect family is not absolutely perfect. Sometimes, they put a façade on and pretend that everything is fine. But, it's not.
I liked the story because I got to read, even though it's fiction, a side of the real world that no one bothers to look. For example, “a full year of marriage, and he still didn't suspect a thing” explains how the wife is planning something and her husband doesn't know. When Garret, the politician, tells Tracy, his wife, to let him do all the talking, she responds by saying “I'd just end up embarrassing myself, wouldn't I?” The readers know that Tracy was being sarcastic, but Garret does not. Peyton did a good job showing and not telling throughout the story.
