“I Hate Poetry” by Yerika Reyes caught my attention with its catchy title. I read on, thinking the poem was about me.

The author made it obvious that she hates poetry by her use of similes and hyperbole. For example, “my anger turns to fury as the pounding gets louder and louder,” “only to remember I lost my sight,” and “it makes my head feel like the host of a jack hammer” hit home. As these images filled my head, I could actually feel her pain. This ­poem doesn't quite rhyme but it does use many unusual words.

I really liked this poem because I am also not a huge fan of poetry. Yerika hates poetry too. Words spin in her head and she gets mad, angry, and anxious, just like I do.

Yerika is an outstanding writer who ­deserved to be published in Teen Ink.
