An extraordinary Power

You discover one day that you have extraordinary power. You’re walking through the park next to your house, waiting for an unimportant friend. It’s nothing new, as a twelve-year-old kid you have lots of friends. You think about all of the minor people in your life. Many are the same age as you. You wonder what the friend that you’re meeting thinks about you. Suddenly, another voice pops into your head. It’s your friend’s. “Ok, mom. Drive faster,” you hear her say. Or think. You jump a little when you hear her voice and you feel your heartbeat in your chest. You wonder how her voice got in your head. You listen for her again. “I wonder what she’s thinking about?” you ask yourself. Suddenly, her voice pops into your head again. “I hate this kid. Why am I even here?” you cringe again.

Why is she even here then? Anger starts to well up inside of you. “Kill Yourself!” you think. The little voice in your head goes silent. You hear the screech of car tires and a high-pitched scream… “It was presumably a suicide,” you hear the news reporters say two days later. There was simply no way that it could have been anything else. She had run in front of the intersection and stared the driver in his eyes before falling over and letting herself get run over by the driver. You had been thinking this exact thing every second of your life for the last couple of days. You even wished for her to be back alive. That didn’t work. You sit there, only thinking one thing. You were responsible for your friend's death.

The author's comments:

This piece was based on a prompt from my English teacher. We had to make a story about an extraordinary power that someone discovers out of the blue. I wanted to make the protagonist's pronouns "you" because I didn't want it to apply to a specific character. After all, the protagonist's personality didn't matter and wasn't something that I wanted to come up with.
