August 2022 Fiction Contest: Best Friends aren’t always Best Friends
Sheila was on her way home from an annual reunion with her friends from childhood. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to do it”, says the only other passenger. As the girl exits the bus, Sheila notices that she left her bag. She grabs the bag, chases her, as the girl looks back to smile and says, “Keep it, it’s for you”. As Sheila takes a look in the bag, she picks up a scrapbook that she and
Aliya, her lost best friend, made when they were in middle school. As she flips through the pages, she reads, “I escaped from you”.
