August 2022 Fiction Contest: The Sleepwalker

When AJ went to sleep, his nightmares were filled with snarling dogs and growling wolves.
But this night was different.
AJ hung his ankles over his bed and searched slippers with his toes.
He stood up, back straight, and walked through his house with eyes closed.
He walked down the stairs one at a time, his mouth open just enough to snore.
He opened the front door and walked into the street in his pajamas.
When AJ woke up from his deep sleep, he was in the middle of a dog shelter with ten four-legged friends.
He couldn't help but smile.
