August 2022 Fiction Contest: Bunnies in the Rain
Another dark drop stained the pavement, bringing with it the wonderful scent of a storm. Although the coldness and rain made it difficult to tie my shoes, I forced my stiff fingers to loop the shoelace bunnies into a knot. But, the bunnies slowed as heat spread across the back of my neck and a drop of warm liquid landed on my head, sending chills down my spine. The smell of rained-on cement was suddenly overtaken by an overwhelming stench of garbage and rotting flesh. The last thing I remember was looking up from my still-unlaced bunnies and wishing I hadn’t.
