"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity;
and I'm not sure about the universe." -Einstein

"A room without books is like a body without a soul." -Cicero

My boyfriend Scott and I were walking down the streets of New York; it was dark and cold, and rain was pouring down on our heads.
'What was I thinking?' I thought as we hurried down the dark foggy streets. We were on our way to a party in Manhattan, I had to sneak out because my mother wouldn't let me go. I suddenly understood why. It was so dark and ominous tonight, bums and gangs wandering around trying to sell questionable supplies. I kept my gaze straight ahead, clutching Scott's hand when one of them headed our way. My heart started pounding as he neared, I didn't look at him. Thankfully he walked right on past us, not even acknowledging us. That was perfectly alright with me.
I kept walking feeling a little lost and scared, the rain seemed to be coming down harder now and the fog was getting thicker, I could barely see.
“Spare me some change?” asked a bum I had planned on breezing by.
We took out all the change we had and gave it to him.
“Thank you, God bless you.” he said.
I wondered if God had blessed me he wouldn't have let us get lost in this storm, swallowed in the dark foggy streets.
“Are you okay, Lina?” Scott asked, caressing my hand.” We can go home if you don't want to go.”
“I'm fine,” I said smiling at him,” I'll be alright as long as I'm with you.”
He stopped to smile at me, then he kissed me. Beautiful moments are born in the shower, they say. They're right. He stared at me with his beautiful Violet eyes, his blonde hair plastered to his face by the rain. He looked perfect to me, and I knew I looked perfect to him.
“I love you.” he said.
I smiled and said, “I love you too.”
He grinned and kissed me deeply, it was the kind of kiss you'd never forget, it's not a sloppy make out session kiss. It's a lover's kiss. This was the longest most passionate kiss we had ever shared together, I wanted it to last forever.
“Well, well, looka' here, got a cute little couple sharing a little kiss.” It was the gang member that had just walked past us. He had a gun.”Boys! I got something interestin' here.”
Three more gang members walked out of an alley, grinning at me, completely ignoring Scott. I clung to him tighter and he placed me behind him.
“We are just going to a party, we don't want any trouble.” He said strongly, I loved that about him, he was so strong and stern, a man.”If it's money you want then please just take that and let us go.”
“I don't want your money,” said the GM,”I see something else I like.” He smiled at me and walked a little closer, I could smell the evil on him. I started to whimper and Scott rubbed my hand, and said quietly to me,”it's going to be alright, Lina.” I believed him.
“Don't tell the girl no lies, son.” said GM two.”You know you ain't goin' nowhere with us.”
Scott looked at me, thoughtfully, and I saw something in his eyes I'd never seen before. Fear. He was just as scared as I was now, and he knew something was going to happen. He turned his back on the gang to face me and squeezed my hands. He kissed my lips gently, and whispered in my ear.
“Run.”
He let go of my hand and turned around, he expected me to run, so I ran. I ran back up the street in the direction of my home and hoped Scott was following. I heard footsteps running after me and I assumed it was Scott so I slowed down.
'BANG!'
The sound of a gunshot.
I stopped and looked back to see the gang members running after me, Scott wasn't running after them. He was lying on the street, motionless.
“NO!” I shrieked, running back to him. The gang stopped me and I kicked with all of my might, but they grabbed my legs and threw me to the ground.
I screamed and fought to try and get away but there were too many of them. I kept fighting and screaming, they were yanking at my jeans attempting to get them off.
I cried and begged them not to do it.
“Oh, there, there. Why would we let such a beautiful girl like you go to waste?” said GM 3 gently, lightening up on the yanking.
I started to sob audibly.
“Shh... Shhh. Don't cry, you'll miss the fun.” he said with a smile, the rest of the gang laughed.
A bright light suddenly shined down upon us, blinding me temporarily,'am I dying?' I thought, but I could still move so I ruled that out.
I stared up at the miraculously bright light and I saw a figure descending from the night sky. It had big white wings and skin so tanned it seemed gold and god-like. It was a man, I could see, he was shirtless and wore only flowing white pants, it wasn't perverted, not on him, it looked natural on him. And he was beautiful.
The gang stepped away from me to observe what was still descending from sky, they didn't run they just watched in awe.
The man with the wings landed between me and the gang and when he spoke it sounded like a command from the heavens, you could not disobey.
“Step away from the child.” he bellowed . His voice echoing in the streets, muting the storm that just a few minutes ago was noisily pouring down on our heads, flooding the streets in its wrath.
The gang and all their stupidity did not run, they just stared, frightened and stone still.
“Leave this place, NOW!” roared the man again. They scattered this time, some slipping and falling on the slippery sidewalk.
I yanked my jeans back up and buttoned them. I got to my feet shakily and wobbled over to Scott's body, there was a hole in the middle of his chest, where his heart would be, it was oozing thick red blood down his sides. I knelt beside him and held his hand, he was growing cold and I didn't feel a pulse in his wrist. Tears started to well in my eyes and I couldn't hold back the little sob that was coming. A hand touched my shoulder and I jumped to my feet and backed away from the thing that had touched me.
“I am no enemy, child,” He said, it was the man that ordered the gang to leave. He had dark hair and didn't look too much older than myself, maybe 20, his hair was dark with gold highlights streaking threw it, the gold sparkled lightly as he held his hands up in an “I mean no harm” gesture.
“I am an Angel of God,” he said walking towards me, slowly,” I am your guardian, Lina.”
“I don't have a guardian.”I said, though it was a stupid thing to say considering the fact that he just said that he is. He looked at me thoughtfully, with sad sincere eyes, and knelt down beside Scott.
“You loved this boy?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“I cannot save him, but I can stay here until help comes to you.” he said sadly.
I moved over to the Angel and knelt next to him and Scott. I took out my phone and called for help. I called my mother too, but she was frantic with fear and asked too many questions so I hung up on her and stared at Scott's dead eyes. He was so young.
“I'm so sorry I could not come sooner, Master's commands were to watch you and you alone. Scott had his own guardian, but I'm afraid it was his time. He did a noble thing for you, he fought the young man with the weapon with only his fist, not knowing if you were going to get away or not. Master told me not to waste the boys efforts, he gave me permission to reveal myself and save you.”
“I'd rather die right now.”I said.
“No you don't,” he said,” if you wanted to die you would have taken what those boys wanted to do to you in silence, with no struggle and no will to live. You fought just as hard as Scott did, but God has blessed you with a little help.”
“Why didn't God help Scott?” I asked, tears streaming down my face.
“When someones time comes, there death is inevitable, it cannot be stopped, nor can it be reversed. He sacrificed his life for you, Lina, do not throw it away because you claim to be unable to live without him. He was a nice and lovable boy.Very few humans are worth such merciful regrets.”
“I'm not ready for him to go, though.” I sobbed.
“Nobody is ready for anyone to go, especially the ones they truly love. You just have to remember that he is with God now, probably just as saddened about his loss for you as much as you are about your loss for him. He is in a better place now, and you will see him when your time comes.” We heard the ambulance sirens nearing our location and the Angel stood up in preparation to ascend.
“Wait. Will I ever see you again?”
He looked at me mournfully his brown eyes sparkling with gold.
“When thy time of need arrives, I shall descend again upon thee.”
He smiled a gentle smile at me and ascended into the heart of the warm light shining from the heavens, until he was no more.
The ambulance arrived and told me to step away from the expired body, to let them handle it. Even though there was nothing to handle.
My mother came shortly afterwords and pulled me into a lung crushing hug.
“Lina, oh God! Are you alright?” she asked, shedding tears of joy for my safety.
“Yeah, I'm okay, momma.” I said calmly patting her back.
“Are you sure? Do you need the the paramedics to look at you?”
“No, I'm fine they didn't do leave any scars, and nothing's broken.”
She hugged me again as if she'd never let me go again. And she probably wouldn't have if the paramedics hadn't told her they needed to check me out.
They checked me out asked me questions about my health: how did I feel, was I tired, did feel weak. Then the police showed up and asked more questions: did you see who did it? Can you describe them? Ect. They finally let me go home with my mother, to, quote”get some rest” unquote. Did they really think I would rest after what just happened ?
When we got home I went to bed, I didn't sleep, though. I thought about the Angel, my guardian, who will always watch over me. I wondered if he and Scott were watching over me now. And I wondered if Scott was happy.
"He is happy, Lina." says a gentle whisperer.
The Angel.
I smiled and wrapped myself in my blanket, slowly drifting easily into a deep and peaceful sleep.
