Old Love
ACT I , SCENE 6
SYNOPSIS :
In the scene of the party Benvolio sets his eyes on Juliet and falls in love at first sight. He hesitates to approach her and decides to watch from afar. Mercutio sees Benvolio gazing lovingly at someone and approaches him to ask about what he’s looking at. Benvolio tell him about whom he has fallen for but then sees Romeo and Juliet flirting and gets upset, Benvolio is heartbroken and enraged. He is about ready to fight when Mercutio stops him and asks if he really wants to destroy his friendship for a Capulet. Benvolio is shocked at the revelation and calms down. He decides that because they are in love with each other he will let them be. Later Mercutio confesses to Benvolio.
[ENTER BENVOLIO]
BENVOLIO: Ay me! Oh Heavens! My heart has been struck!
And wherefore tis about to combust is the doing of Eros!
By his arrow have i fallen prey,
For yonder is the fairest lady my eyes have ever laid upon
Her luminous features have given me life and light!
I was not living ere
and my days were dark ere i saw her,
now they shine so bright i might burn!
Her smile is a flame and i am a moth drawn
hopelessly in love!
Her laugh is the pungi and i am the sly snake!
MERCUTIO: HO! Benvolio! What is that look?
What has seized thou and adorned thou with such a wonderlust gaze
Ay me! This heart enslaving curse !
It taketh from one and giveth to the other!
Dear Benvolio, tell me it is the festives that enchant you so
For i cannot deal with another lovesick fool!
BENVOLIO: Oh Mercutio! The heavens do not grant thy’s wishes tonight! What thou hath wished not for is what thou was granted.
BENVOLIO: For tonight i am that love sick fool
Struck in my heart [put your hand over your chest],
by an arrow which is so deeply pierced
In my soul i fear i cannot nor do i want to remove it
Oh how many years of my life i wonder, my dear friend
hath i been trained for this camellia that sways across the room
For her i fain would give my life
Light torch! Say a prayer! Write a letter! Seal it!
I love her! Tis love not lust! she will be my wife
[turn your back away from Juliet and face Mercutio]
And smight thee Oh Mars whomever say nay!
MERCUTIO: Marry! Thou hath said thou art in love then
thou art in love! Even though thou knoweth not who thee loves. But friend! Thou is hither,
and thou professes to me and the gods
of all thy’s love yet thou is so far from it.
Wherefore is this so? Thou art man
and man dost not stand in fear
Of love! Hark for love is like cloth
and if thou dost not hold on to it
It will taken away by the winds and given to another
[Mercutio turns him to face Romeo and Juliet flirting]
BENVOLIO: Wherefore art my friend courting my love?
This is betrayal! This is treachery! how could Romeo do this?
I what world did i wrong the gods to deserve such fate?
My love or my brother? But wherefore am i in confliction when tis he whom hath wronged me! I see now!
He makes mockery of me! If tis death Romeo wishes
Then tis death Romeo will get!
[Benvolio heads for Romeo but Mercutio stops him]
MERCUTIO: Rest thys tail Benvolio!
Thou hath changed so much for love!
The peaceful Benvolio now chooses war?
Thys heart knoweth he hath done no wrong by you!
He saw a maiden he admired as you had anon
Thou chose to talk of love and he chose to go take it!
BENVOLIO: But i cannot give up!
[Mercutio takes Benvolio to a secluded place]
MERCUTIO: But thou must! Will thee slay thy bretheren
For a maiden thee dost not know?
Pray Benvolio! Be undone from thys enchantment!
She is charmed by Romeo already! Thou must give up!
Or thou will repeat history over the daughter of the
Contributors of all this conflict!
But this time the war will be within our own family!
There are many other people out there for thou!
Many who will give thee their all Benvolio!
And will always be by thys side!
BENVOLIO: What madness doth thou speak of?
Daughter? What is this thou tells me Mercutio! Doth not lie
MERCUTIO: I speak of the truth! She is a Capulet!
The daughter of lord Capulet at that! So forget the maiden
Who knows not of thy existence in her world Benvolio
And be with the one who deems thee as their entire world.
BENVOLIO: She is a capulet! How could this be!
No! The gods have surely doomed me to despair!
MERCUTIO: [Is slightly pissed off]
You still speak of her even after what
Ive revealed to you! Forget about her! The world is vast
Benvolio! I’ve already told you there is another person
That will love you deeply and so dearly she will be
A distant memory!
BENVOLIO: And who is this maiden you speak of!
Who is she that loves me so dearly and deems
Me so precious! If she exists show her to me now!
For surely i have heard not of such a maiden.
[Mercutio kisses Benvolio]
MERCUTIO: Not a maiden, me.
