Within Mere Hours
I, he, we, she, they,
got a phone call at 2 a.m.
She said, “He might be dead,”
it didn’t matter who told me,
he might be dead,
it burned in my head,
he might be dead,
I asked how it happened,
no one would tell me,
we didn’t know,
we didn’t know anything,
they drove to the hospital at 3 a.m.
By then we knew more,
it was a car accident,
but it was still all such a blur at 4 a.m.
Police scanners,
all I could hear were police scanners at 5 a.m.
She told me, “He might be dead,”
I wanted to know what was going on,
he might be dead,
he could be dead,
he was dead,
all I could remember were screams at 6 a.m.
I was there at 6 a.m.
he passed away at 6 a.m.
He’s dead,
a family friend,
a family friend died at 6 a.m.
