The Voiceless
I wonder why the house is so quiet. Maybe my mommy and daddy aren’t home yet. I should probably go and see what is going on.
Little Ben wondered into the living room with the mismatched furniture with the pealing yellow paint from the walls and the smelly carpet. The coffee table had an old moldy banana with fruit flies covered with an old pizza box.
“Yummy pizza,” said Ben as he opened the pizza box. The box was empty except for the bitten crusts. Ben picked up the crust and he began to chew on them. The crunch of the pizza crusts was the only sound in the room.
Eww these are old and stale it’s going to make my tummy ache. I hope my mommy doesn’t hit me if she sees me in this room.
As Ben continued to chew on the pizza crusts, there was a crash from the kitchen.
Daddy is home. I should go and give him a kiss that should make him feel better.
“Daddy, Daddy you're home. I missed you,” said Ben.
His father just looked at him as if he couldn’t understand what Ben was saying and ignored him.
“Daddy are you hurt?”
“Daddy what happened with Mommy’s favorite wine glass?”
“Daddy how was work?”
“Daddy come and say hi”
“DADDY”
His father turned around and he slammed his briefcase on the table and he bend down to look Ben in the eyes. His expression was dark and dominating.
Finally my daddy is going to say hi and give me hug and tell me how much he loves me
“Ben shut the f*** up”
“You annoying piece of s*** I can’t believe that she made us get you”
“Stop making noise, I can’t understand what you are saying”
“I don’t want you”
Then there was silence. You could hear neither Ben nor his father. Ben just bowed his head as his father stood up and opened a can of beer from the fridge and he just looked at Ben.
Daddy doesn’t mean that. No he’s just angry from something from work. He can’t mean that. He loves me. He has to love me because out of everyone that he could have chose he choose me. But I love daddy.
The lights from the garage turned on and so did the garage door. The mother was arriving from her day job as a secretary. She walked into the house and Ben was able to get a look at her. Her pantyhose were torn and she wasn’t wearing shoes and her dress was stained with a dark red tint. She looked like a clown with the red lipstick that stained her teeth and the eyeliner was running down her face.
“My baby how are you sweetie?” she said.
Mommy! Mommy! I knew that seeing her was going to make everything better. She usually brings a smile to my face.
“Dave I’m home,” mommy said to my daddy
“About time did you bring dinner?” Dave told the mother
“Mommy what happened to you?” Ben asked his mother
“Rita tell him to shut up, I’m sick of the noise,” Dave said
“Dave what has he ever done to you. Maybe if you gave him the chance to show you how much he cares for you then you wouldn’t find him annoying”
“All he does is make noise. I never wanted him. You made us get him…”
Why doesn’t daddy ever want anything to do with me?
“… and I don’t want him in this house anymore. Come here Ben.”
“DAVE PUT HIM DOWN”
“No daddy put me down”
“Daddy no not outside it’s raining, I’m going to get sick”
“Daddy I promise that I’ll stop talking”
Dave walked through the different rooms tripping over bins of dirty clothes and cans that were all over the floor. He finally reached the kitchen and turned on the light. He opened the door and dropped Ben on the floor with the rain pouring over his head.
“Stop barking. Why are you barking? You don’t know anything because you’re just a stupid mutt,” said Dave.
Dave locked the door and turned off the lights and went back into the living room and argued with Rita over getting rid of the dog. Ben stayed in his spot and whimpered.
Mommy should come get me. She always does. Ben, daddy doesn’t mean that. You’re not a stupid mutt. You know and hear everything he says. Just be a good dog maybe he’ll love you someday.
