Leave The Past Behind
I stared out the window as the plane slowly ascended into the cloudy sky. I had to get away...even if it meant leaving my family. My family...they were probably worried sick about me. And my best friend, Connor, I can’t even imagine what he’s going through. I just left, no thought to it, no planning, no nothing. I had been saving up a couple hundred dollars to fly somewhere, and honestly I had no idea where I was going. I just needed to get away.
I know my family and friends don’t deserve this, but I can’t stand it at home. School was horrible. Every class, someone found a new excuse to bully me. The teachers don’t help at all; they were oblivious to the situation. Although, my brother, Hayden, didn’t hesitate to help me out. Hayden...memories flooded back to my head. I miss him so much. He was the only person that would have been able to stop me from leaving. But I didn’t tell anyone I was leaving. Not even him. I didn’t want anyone trying to stop me. I knew that leaving was for the best.
I heard a voice while I was in deep thought, a sweet caring voice. I turned my head to see one of the flight attendants. “Would you like anything to eat or drink, Miss?” she asked. “Nothing. I’m fine. Thank you,” I replied. I wasn’t hungry, and even if I was I wasn’t going to eat anything. “Okay. I’m here if you need anything!” she said. “Thanks,” I told her. How are people so happy? Don’t they have any problems? I will never be able to answer that question. “We will be arriving in Denver in an hour. Thank you for using Delta Airlines.” One more hour to go. Then I can start my new life. I am even going to change my name. My new name, Katherine Young, will suite me much better than Angeline Smith, my birth name. Any chances of anyone from Ohio recognizing me must be impossible. I can not have that happening. If my family or friends find out my location, they will bring me back to Ohio, where I will once again be tortured. I sensed a light dizziness come over me. I was exhausted. I let my eyes slowly close, blocking out the world. Before I knew it, I was sound asleep.
“We are now arriving in Denver. Please take your belongings to the terminal. Everyone have a great day!” Yes, it is going to be a great day. Today is the day I get my new identity. Finally, my old life won’t exist anymore. I grabbed my belongings and headed to the terminal. “Miss, may I help you carry your things?” I turned around to a tall handsome boy with dark hair and bright blue eyes. “No, I’m fine. Thank you though.” I replied. “You’re welcome. Can I walk you to the terminal?” he asked sweetly. “Sure.” I said. I did need some help getting to through the terminal and he would make good company. “So where do you come from?” he asked me. It’s not like I’m going to see him again, so I replied, “Ohio, what about you?” “I’m from Connecticut.” Connecticut. Seems like a nice place. “Cool. Well, I better get going. Thanks for all of the help!” I replied. “Sure! Can I get your number?” he asked. Well, he was cute. I guess it couldn’t hurt. “Sure. Let me type it into your phone for you.” I replied. He handed me his phone, and I typed in my name and number. “Kat?” he asked. “Short for Katherine,” I replied. “That’s a cute name,” he said with a smile. “Thanks. Well, I’m going to head out. Nice meeting you.” I said. “You, too!” he said, then he waved goodbye. I realized that I didn’t even get his name. Too late now. Hopefully he’ll text me soon. I looked down at my phone. 2:38. Okay, I have plenty of time.
I exited the airport and walked to the car rental. I noticed the sign said, “Must be 21 or older to rent car.” Oh no. What am I going to do? I’m only 18! I wish I had gotten that boy’s number, I could’ve texted him. I checked my phone and it said that I had recieved a message from an unknown number. Yes, this might be him! It said, “Hey Kat! It’s that boy from the airport! Just wanted to say hey. :)” This is great! Now I can ask him if he can drive me to my new apartment. I texted back “Hey! Can you do me a favor?” He texted “Sure! Anything for you.” I explained to him that I wasn’t old enough to rent a car and I needed to get to my apartment. He said, “Sure, I’d love to! I will pick you up at the car rental in about 15 minutes!” Wow, this boy is so nice. Nothing like the boys at my old school, except Connor and Hayden. I made my way over to a bench and rested for a few minutes. I laid my head back and closed my eyes. After what felt like seconds, I heard a car pull up right beside me. I noticed it was the boy at the airport and hopped up from the bench and into his car. “Hey!” he said. “Hi!” I replied back, being polite. “I never did catch your name, what is it?” I asked him. “It’s Cameron.” he replied. Cameron...that's a cute name. I noticed his deep blue eyes. I feel like I know those eyes, like I had stared into them before. “Oh, okay. I like your name, Cameron.” I said. “Thanks!” he replied. The rest of the car ride was a bit awkward, just small talk here and there. I told him my apartment’s address and once he pulled in I thanked him for the ride. “Oh, and one more thing Kat. Would you like to go on a date sometime with me?” he asked. Hmm...I’m not sure. I feel like I trust him even though we just met, but something’s too familiar about him. But I decided the only way to find out was to agree. “Sure, I’d love to.” I replied. “Great! What about this Saturday? I’ll pick you up at seven?” he asked. “That’d be wonderful. Thanks.” I said. “No problem! Well, I’ll see you then! Bye!” he said. “Bye!” I replied. I slowly walked up to the front desk to get registered. “How may I help you?” the lady up front asked me. “I need an apartment,” I said. “Sure. Let me get you registered.” She handed me a room key to room 238 and asked me a few more questions. After I was registered, I went up to go see my apartment. I slid the room key into the lock and the door opened. It’s a pretty nice room. Now I just need a job to be able to afford it. Tomorrow, Friday, will be my job hunting day.
I decided to go get something to eat so I changed my clothes into something a little nicer and re-applied my makeup. I exited the apartment and walked across the street to a couple of the restaurants. I chose a somewhat fancy one and sat down in a booth. The waiter took my order and brought it out within 30 minutes. The meal was good. I think I’m going to do some shopping before I go back to my apartment. I shopped at one of the outlets. Then decided I needed to go back to the apartment. I changed my clothes into pajamas and layed down onto my bed. My eyes slowly closed and soon I drifted off to sleep.
“Hayden! No! You can’t tell Mom and Dad! They will make me go back to Ohio!” I yelled. “I can’t just leave now, knowing where you are! Mom and Dad are worried sick! At least let me tell them that I found you!” he yelled back. I woke up with sweat dripping down my forehead, yelling “no” over and over and over again. Thank goodness, it was all a dream. Hayden doesn’t really know where I am. But those blue eyes that he had in my dream...why do they seem so familiar? No one else has those blue eyes, other than...Cameron! At least I think he’s Cameron. Maybe that’s not even his real name.
I got up from my bed and got changed into my nicest dress. Today was job hunting day. I need to look my best. I wonder what jobs I should apply for? I need something that I will enjoy doing but also get paid a decent amount of money. Maybe I could work for a bank or something. I like accounting so maybe I could figure something out. I exited the apartment and starting walking to the nearest bank. "Hi, how may I help you today, young lady?" The lady at the counter asked me. "I'm looking for a job. Is there one available here?" I asked "There sure is! Hold on one minute while I go grab the manager," she said. I stood there in silence while she went off in the back to get the manager. She came back after about a minute with the manager. "So you are looking for a job, Miss?" He asked me. "Yep! My name is Kat. Short for Katherine." I held out my hand for him to shake. He took it and replied, "Nice to meet you! I'm Robert." He replied. "Nice to meet you!" I said. "I'm going to be asking you a few questions, is that okay?" He asked. "Sure!" I replied.
He asked me a bunch of questions about what school I went to and how old I was. I answered them and after he was finished he thanked me and went into another room. I sat there in silence, waiting for him to come back to see if I was hired. After about 20 minutes Robert came back in and sat down. "Kat, I just want to let you know that we would love it if you would work here with us!" Yes! My first real job! Now I can afford my apartment. "Your first shift will be Monday at 11:00 am. Is that alright Kat?" He asked. "Sure! That's great!" I replied. "Okay, great. That's all I need for today, see you Monday!" He said. "Thank you." I said. I exited the bank and headed to go get lunch.
I walked into a restaurant to get lunch. I sat down and a waiter came to take my order. I noticed his bright blue eyes that stood out and perfectly complemented his blue uniform. Wait...was that Cameron? “Cameron? What are you doing here?” I asked him. “I work here silly!” He said. “Oh, okay. So what’s up? Are we still on for tomorrow?” I asked. “Of course! I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he said smiling. I gave a smile back. "Great!" I said. I ordered my meal and Cameron brought it right out. "Thank you," I said. "You're welcome!" He said with a smile. I ate quickly and then headed back to my apartment. I am so excited for my date tomorrow with Cameron, but something doesn't feel right...
I slowly drifted off to sleep. I dreamed that my family had found me again and they took me back to Ohio. "No! No!" I woke up yelling. Today is my date with Cameron. I can't mess anything up. I slowly got up from my bed and put a cute, casual outfit on. I fixed my hair and makeup and waited for Cameron to pick me up. I headed down to the lobby to wait for him. I noticed his car pull up to the complex and hopped in. "Hey!" He said. "Hey Cameron!" I replied. We sat in awkward silence for the rest of the car ride to lunch. Once we arrived Cameron jumped out and opened my door for me. "Thanks," I said.
We entered the restaurant and sat down at a booth. "So, you come from Ohio, correct?" Cameron asked me. "Yep!" I replied. "What are you doing in Denver?" He asked. I kind of freaked out for a moment. What do I say? "I-I-I'm on a vacation. Just a little get-away. That's all." I replied. Cameron looked deeply at me. I noticed him staring into my green eyes."Cameron...what are you looking at?" I asked him. "Angeline...is that you?" Cameron asked. My palms became sweaty and my knees went weak. W-what? How did he know? “H-how did you know?” I asked Cameron. “Angeline...it’s Hayden. I...uh, found your plane ticket in the trash at home. I couldn’t just let you leave,” he replied. Hayden? I didn’t know what to say...I was in complete shock. How did he find my plane ticket? I thought I ripped it up...that’s impossible! How could this happen? “Hayden, is it really you?” I asked in shock. “Yeah, it’s really me. I’m just so glad I found you, Angeline. I love you so much.” he said. I hugged him tight, whispering, “I love you, too.”
