August 2022 Fiction Contest: The Seashell
Seashells...
The strong ocean waves crash against my legs. With a simple slice, a broken pink seashell cuts into my knee. I stare at my blood staining the ocean water. I bite back a whimper as I stumble out of the water, clutching the shell tight in my hand.
I turn to Mom, fighting back hot tears, “This stupid shell cut my knee! I hate it!”
Mom shakes her head, gazing at the ocean, “No, it’s worth something. It cut your knee, after all.”
I frown, looking down. “But it’s just a shell.”
Mom nods as if that explained everything.“Exactly.”

When I first started this piece, I felt like it wouldn't mount to anything. However, I still worked hard to finish it, thinking about all the people that it might help.
This is a piece that underlines that everything has a value no matter how small they are. If any of you talented writers or anyone else who's reading this piece is feelling down or small, this piece is here for you. You're important no matter what others say. You're talented, strong, and brave. This is a frequently used, overlooked saying but it's the best-just be yourself. You might feel small at the moment but you aren't. You never are.
