August 2022 Fiction Contest: Grandpa's Cake
“Beautiful!” gasped Grandpa as he stared at his chocolate cake.
I cut slices for my family.
“Mmmmmm…” uttered Grandma. “Delicious!” complimented Dad.
My face flushed pink with pride. I had spent 4 hours baking for Grandpa’s birthday.
We all gathered around for a family photo.
“Cheese!”
That’s when I noticed everyone’s blue teeth.
“Alyssa,” asked Dad, “What's in the cake?”
I racked my brain frantically. Eggs, flour, sugar. … blue food gel for the lettering.
Whoa…. I had accidentally used blue food coloring instead of food gel!
My face turned crimson with embarrassment.
Everyone laughed. “That’s what toothbrushes are for,” declared Grandpa.
