Riley is Loved

“OWWWW!” I screamed as the insentate doctor continued to poke me with different needles.

“Only two more shots Reily, and then you’re good to go,” my mom said, showing sympathy for me as she could tell I was in pain. The doctor didn’t even care. All he wanted to do was inject me with painful shots and then go home. After 30 gruesome minutes, it was finally time to get in the car and head home.

“He was so rude mom, all he cared about was getting paid.”

“Honey, some people are just…  betrothed. I’ll tell you this, how about we stop and get you a milkshake before going back home?”

“Yay let's go to Dairy Queen, I already know what I’m getting. A chocolate milkshake with oreos, carmel, cookie dough, brownies, fudge sauce, whipped cream… ooo and a cherry on top,” I said with the biggest smile on my face.

“Sounds amazing sweetie.” I can just tell I enamor my mom by the way she looks at me when I’m smiling or laughing.

“How are my girls doing?” My dad said when we opened the front door.

“Good daddy, look I got a milkshake!”

“Let me guess… a chocolate milkshake with caramel and fudge sauce, cookie dough, brownies, oreos, whipped cream, and my girl always loves her cherry on top.”

“You’re right!” I exclaimed.

“Go wash up for dinner now, I made steaks for my two favorites.” I ran upstairs and got ready for dinner like he said. I don’t know what I’d do without them… my parents. They’re the best and always make me feel better after my treatments.

The author's comments:

My name is Maddy and I wrote this piece to represent children who suffer with cancer. I wanted it to be light hearted, but at the same time show the deeper meaning of much sick children suffer day after day. However, a positive attitude (which Riley's parents portray) can make it much easier on the child.
