Smiling A True Smile
The man frowns as he sits down onto his chair. He is tired, and feeling worn out. He has worked hard over the past 20 years, and has built a successful company completely out of scratch. He is rich, yet feels like he is missing something important. A long time ago, he married a bright, young woman whom he met at a party. Throughout the years, however, he had all but forgot about his wife, instead choosing to spend all his time working. The last time he ever truly smiled was long into the past, and his emotions were buried under all the piles of work, work, and more work. On his forty-fifth birthday, he stands next to a hospital room. When he is allowed in, he looks around, and sets his eyes on his wife, holding the baby. Somewhere from deep inside his heart, he smiles a true smile.

I wrote this set piece to try to create a story based around a conflict. To do this, I played around with a character’s emotions inside of their mind. I described the man as successful and hardworking, but lacking something. Then, I gave background information on his wife and his work, showing two sides he has to pick from. What I like about my set piece is that I used vivid details to create a meaningful conflict in the story.
