CIVIL WAR JOURNAL
A letter to myself:
Today was the worst, by far. I was at one second, running alongside my buddies, racing within the camp, when a hail of mortar fire rang through the air. We all halted, but within an instance everyone was scattered and heading for their weapons. I, however; was frozen by the sight of a thousand rebel souls running up the hill towards our camp. I looked at my feet to see the horrid sight of a fellow soldier, legless, and without a left arm; he was dead. I looked back up in time enough to have the butt of a rifle hit me square in the face…….
I awoke to the sound of grown men crying. It looked to be about midnight. I turned to the soldier lying next to me and asked him where we were. He said that we were somewhere south of Georgia. I was astonished to hear that small piece of news, for last I remember, I was fighting in the heart of Savannah. I looked around and noticed some sort of cage around us… I broke down in tears, for I then realized that we were prisoners of war.
