August 2022 Fiction Contest: Abyss
The heat flashes intensified. I couldn’t seem to wipe off my sweaty palms fast enough to keep them dry. The way he used his words was vile.
Suddenly, I was there. Entering the bathrooms, I clutched a stall door to steady myself. I couldn’t think straight. His words kept running through my mind.
Slowly, I peered into the mirrors. Mascara streaks tainted my face. When did I start crying?
I tried unsuccessfully to wipe my cheeks off with my blue sweater sleeves. Normally, the sweater matched my eyes. My eyes weren’t blue right now. I only saw a gray abyss instead.
This was inspired by the damage people can bring with their words. I hope when people read this it will help them understand the power they hold, and that they should use it wisely.
